Altec Lansing inMotion Max - Portable speakers with digital player dock for iPod Review

The dimensions of the inMotion MAX are 12.2"(W)x2"(D)x7.6"(H). It is a very portable size, easy to pickup and take along on a weekend to the coast, to a different room of the house, and anywhere in between. In particular, the design feels very thin and sexy. Altec Lansing, as always, has spent a great deal of time designing a beautiful enclosure for their state of the art audio system.
With an LCD display on the front which scrolls the meta data of the content being played and beautifully backlit controls on the top which light up when touched, Altec Lansing has included some nice touches which make the inMotion MAX both elegant and practical. The glossy black case may indeed be a fingerprint magnet, however, it provides a classy chassy for this small wonder.
The controls are clearly marked and easy to activate. They are flush with the top surface and touch sensitive (very nice touch, no pun). I really like the fact that they are backlit. Nice addition for those "special" moments when it is dark and the remote is nowhere to be found.
Speaking of finding the remote, I am equally impressed with the Remote Cubby built into the inMoton MAX (see above picture). Too many manufactures of electronic equipment have failed to realize that remotes are easily lost. Kudos to Altec Lansing for their solution. Now if we could only remember to slide the remote in its home after using it.

Of course, what would an audio system be with out a docking station. Altec Lansing has come up with a nice design for the inMotion MAX. At the base of the front, there is a retractable docking station that allows you to retract the dock when it is not needed. Having the ability to retract the dock helps to maintain the thin profile of the inMotion MAX. All in all, a very nice design that does not sacrifice beauty for practicality.

FEATURES
With such a practical collection of features like: an FM Radio, Alarm Clock Functionality, an Enhanced Remote, a Li-ion Rechargeable Battery, and a Remote Cubby to name only a few, the inMotion MAX is indeed feature rich. Jump to the product page for the specs.

USABILITY
It is important not to get lost in the design of the inMotion MAX. After all, this is first and foremost an audio system. Built around two 2" full-range drivers and two 2" passive radiators, the inMotion MAX, on paper, is rather light on the hardware that would normally produce the deep bass we have all come to desire in our audio systems.
Like its sibling, the T612, the inMotion MAX relies upon Altec Lansing's XdB technology to produce deep bass without a subwoofer. Unlike the T612, the inMotion MAX does not quite achieve the level of bass achieved by the T612 (see MyMac.com review of the T612). Instead, the inMotion MAX produces a more evenly balanced tonal quality.

No matter what type of content I played through the inMotion MAX, I received a pleasant and balanced tone sans the peaks and valleys of audio systems containing tweeters and subwoofers. High end audio is not, IMO, what this system was designed to achieve. Rather, this system was designed to produce pleasant audio on the go while including many other practical features which make this a very useful traveling partner and a great value.

It is indeed the feature set that made me stand up and take notice of this little wonder. As a, "Works With iPhone" compliant audio system, I tested the ability to seamlessly receive a call on my docked iPhone 3GS while listening to content. As expected, the inMotion MAX gently lowered the volume and with a quick selection of the speaker on the iPhone, routed the call through the audio system speakers. Once the call was finished, the music volume was gently raised to its previous level. Never could a hint of cell noise be heard.

Sporting a rechargeable Li-ion battery, I was able to take the inMotion MAX all around the house and enjoy my content wherever I happened to be located. Easily attaching the included antenna, I tried out the FM Radio. This is a nice option when you are minus your internet connection and need some local information or news. The enhanced remote is very nice. With the ability to control the speaker system functions, the FM radio, playlists, and song navigation, the remote was clearly not an afterthought for Altec Lansing. I know this is silly, but I just love the remote cubby. With the number of remotes I have, umm, misplaced, the remote cubby alone would be worth the price for me.
For me, Altec Lansing hit a home run with this product. It does not pretend to be something it is not. It is a great portable audio system that combines good audio quality with many practical features. All in all, a great value!
MAKING A GREAT THING EVEN BETTER

There is not much to improve here. If I could pick one area for improvement, I would like to have a battery that lasted a little longer than the 2.5 - 3.0 hours I was achieving in my tests. If one were somewhere without the ability to plug into a power outlet, it could be a little disappointing.

With the long list of features, one would expect these to be exceptional speakers. I picked up a set at my local Best Buy, only to return them the day after set up. The sound quality is poor and without the sub-woofer,the satellite speakers sound like they are going to fall apart. I would recommend looking for something else.

Insignia 2.1 Computer Speaker System NS-PCS21 Review

I got a great deal on these speakers, just under twenty bucks at BestBuy Canada for use with my MacBook Pro along with a 24" widescreen monitor. At this price point, I was preparing to be underwhelmed and, to be honest, I was not very pleased with my first impressions of the sound quality. It sounded rather flat with dull highs and muddy bass.

Then I remembered (duh) that the MacBook Pro has an equalizer for both iTunes and iDVD (accessed through the "Window" menu of these applications). Once I selected a preset equalizer setting (for example, "Jazz") the sound quality from the speakers improved substantially! I further custom tweaked the iTunes equalizer using some reference acoustic and vocal jazz tracks and was able to make these speakers produce a pretty nice midrange and clear highs. Moreover, it is actually able to do some halfway decent stereo imaging right on my desktop. (I suspect that it uses a class D switching amplifier chip which are pretty detailed, accurate and have linear frequency response).

There is a slight break-in period and treble and upper mids do get smoother after a few hours. Top end treble does roll off, so don't expect audiophile-like bell shaped treble decays from cymbals - remember these are computer speakers! When the sub's volume is set correctly the bass response is pretty decent. It sounds integrated and goes as low as about 90Hz, which is fine for jazz, classical and most kinds of rock - but not, perhaps, good enough for bass heavy Hip-Hop. That said, the bass is considerably better with the subwoofer placed on the floor, as opposed to on the desk.

With the Equalizer properly set, I was actually wowed by the sound from some of my well recorded jazz CD's, for example Patricia Barber's "Fortnight in France", which includes vocals, piano, acoustic and bass guitars and kick-drums.

DVD Movies with good sound tracks also sound great, but I expect these speakers probably won't do well for gaming or with action movies which have a lot of thunderous explosions.

So, to be clear, these speakers are NOT suited for loud, head-banging music. If you push the volume beyond medium levels it will start to distort! And don't expect thunderous bass either. If you want a speaker that need to do that, look elsewhere or move up to the Insignia 2.1 Computer Speaker System NS-PCS41 4 Piece With Subwoofer.

All in all I am very pleased with my purchase. For those of you considering buying this model, please note the following caveats:

- Your sound source needs to be of good quality! For example, these speakers sound much better with my MacBook Pro than with my Acer Netbook.

- Make sure you tweak the sound through an equalizer. (iTunes and iDVD on the MacBook Pro have an equalizer).

- Position your speakers correctly according to the instructions. There should be no obstructions in front of the satellite speakers. The subwoofer is best placed on the floor.

- Definitely use a power strip that has power conditioner to plug in the power adapter. It will considerably reduce noise and make these speakers sound clearer and make more subtle details audible.

- Don't crank up these speakers too loud. They are not meant for room filling sound, just for your desk!

Cables Unlimited SuperFlat 50ft 14Awg Speaker Wire (AUD-5410-50) Review

I'd used Monster Cable's flat cabling to wire up my side surround speakers in my home theater setup, but decided to try a cheaper solution for my rear surrounds. Searching around on Amazon turned up this speaker "wire" that looked good and was priced right.

Once I received it, however, I was disappointed. Unlike Monster Cable's flat wiring (which is stranded copper wire), this is basically two flattened-out slabs of copper. I'll bet it'd transmit an audio signal really well, but it makes wire termination with banana plug or pins almost impossible--let alone what I usually do, which is use the bare wire.

It does include some kind of strange plastic terminator thing you're supposed to put onto each end of the wire, but there was no enclosed manual on how to do so, and Cables Unlimited's website wasn't much more help.

This might work for some people or some uses, but not mine.

Sony XDR-S10HDiP HD Radio with Dock for iPod/iPhone Review

Excellent product for something that I wasn't so sure at first. Reading the other reviewer's comments, I was afraid that the giant voltage converter (the "brick") was going to make a lot of noise. But it doesn't and quiet actually. The sound quality was acceptable (the surround sound is a very old feature of Sony, all the way from the 80's). There is an audio in, for your non-iPod gadgetry. It works fine for my iPod Touch and iPod nano (3rd gen). The remote can play playlists. The iTunes tag, a cool feature, is not used often enough by me, since I listen mostly to NPR, not music stations. I do notice the tag light will light up at times (if the station identifies the song at all).

At first I didn't know how to take off the universal dock adapter (supplied), causing a little problem and a nick on the plastic with a sharp surgical blade. There is a little recess at the back of the plastic adapter to take off the whole adapter. The universal adapter does not work for the two iPods I have. And the connector works fine without it.

The reception is generally good for HD Radio. However, I had to use my own radio amplifier to get the best reception. There is a little drop if the signals are not "locked" in (almost like stuttering of human speech, repetitive words here and there if the signals are not strong).

I also like the auto scan feature, reminiscent of most car audio. Other than that, the unit delivers what it promises for a $150 radio. Now there is a 50 bucks off rebate if you buy it right now before the end of Sept 2008. This would bring the price to almost just a $100 for an exceptionally cheap HD radio/ iPod dock charger. Yes, it should work with iPhone 3G, as per other reviewers. And the speakers are shielded, since I can put my Motorola Razor next to it without any problem. No buzzing sound!

Highly recommended for its price (to get the rebate of course). The remote is not lighted, but nobody is going to fault it for its generic design. Have not tested the alarm system, but do NOT think that it is going to be a real alarm clock for you in the morning. There is no Snooze button. Having used a few times of its alarm function, I can tell you that it is better to use your cell phone (like my Razor, which has a snooze button). This is not a real alarm clock. It will wake you up, but not for a lazy guy who hopes to hit the snooze a few times.

Buy this only if 1. you need an ipod charger, compatible with 3G iPhone (my girlfriend's does work!); there are cheaper HD radios out there 2. cannot live without HD radio's promise of multi-cast, like digital TV. Local NPR and classical stations have mutli-cast features, which are very nice. 3. Beautiful black design, which complements any decor. I always like Sony's look and built. Look expensive! 4. Awesome adaptation as a wifi radio, if you happen to own an iPod touch with wifi connection. I listen to Pandora and AOL radio on the net, using this unit.

Don't buy this if you 1. expect HD radio exceeds your audio expectations and needs. The quality of HD radio is not that much better. My stereo system pumps out excellent analog radio sounds, similar to this unit 2. expect this to replace a real clock radio. No snooze button. 3. no audio outs or a headphone jack. Why???!!! Every radio needs an audio out. But this doesn't.

I am satisfied with the performance of this speaker system. There are 3 speakers in a space that is about the size of a small TV remote. They have a better sound than the wired speakers that they replaced. Most of the cheaper laptop speakers are 2 or 3 watts, compared to the 6 watts of the DEEPbass. They are worth the money considering that I paid almost twice the current price.Don't expect the same sound as your Bose wave system, but do expect a superior sound to most other laptop speakers. I have found the small included stand (attached to the neck) useless. The biggest plus is the fact that there are No wires and that it operates soley on the USB port.

Lows:
Hollow plastic enclosure feels a bit cheap for $50. iPod dock adapters are out of date (no adapter for 5G+ iPod Classic or any generation of iPod Nano or Touch). Pressing the buttons on the front of the unit require just a bit too much force, causing the whole unit to move before the button has been pressed.

Summary:
The Memorex MiniMove is a cool and highly portable iPod docking station that plays and charges all dockable iPod models. Overall, the highs outweigh the lows, making a great portable dock for enjoying your music at home and on the go.

I've been looking for a nice speaker set up for my computer and these were the winner. I really like the unique design of both the sub/receiver and the speakers, it's all very clean and visually appealing. More importantly, they sound crystal clear and they're super loud. Listening to music with these is like a new experience, I hear thigns in songs that I've never before because of my low quality ear buds or stock laptop speaker. It's like I'm hearing the album the way it was intended to be heard. Case Logic does great work and this set is a great example of that. Too often, a product is designed nicely but doesn't come through on function, this speaker set nails both.

iHome App Enhanced Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPhone and iPod (Black) Review

I was looking for an alarm clock/charger for my iPhone and finally settled on this one.Partly intrigued by the fact it works in conjunction with an app, I wanted to see how the full package would operate.

It's a little bigger in person than I expected it to be so I might have preferred a smaller device, but that's not a deal breaker.The only other complaint I have is that when the device is working with the app, there's a large button on the top that turns on and emits a rather bright night light that I wish I had the option to turn off.It's not so bright as to keep me awake, but I happen to like a dark room when I sleep, so it's more light than I'm used to.Still, not a deal breaker and I'm thinking about just putting a sticker on top of it or something to dim it down.

The speaker gives out good sound quality, and you can manually control the clock's brightness even to where you can turn the display of completely if you prefer.The app is a nice touch and has some cool features like customizing the music/sounds you sleep and wake-up to, plus about as many alarm options as you want to set.

The buttons on the front are easy to manage and most of the clock's overall management (setting of the time, etc.) is done through the iPhone app, but there are buttons on the back that allow you to manage the clock that way as well.

One thing I was worried about was whether it would work with my iPhone's case on since I've read about other devices that don't fit the phone if you have a case on it.Thankfully this one fits just fine (I have an ifrogz case).

All in all, I'm happy with it.

These Rocketfish RF-WS01 speakers are good and they outperformed the Accosutic Research speakers. They have a good signal and generate little or no static. The sound quality is good but not excellent. I wish it can produce a greater frequency range, especially in the low range. Additionally, the Rocketfish RF-WS01 speakers are cheaper. The only bad things about Rocketfish RF-WS01 speakers are #1) the low volume and #2) they don't have a remote control. However, it is still a great product, especially for their price and the current state of the wireless technology.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini Docking Speaker for iPod Review

I've been looking forward to this product since its introduction more than a month ago.I loved the original Zeppelin, but was excited about the smaller form factor and a USB digital connection in the Zeppelin Mini.Call me naive, I was actually hoping that the sound quality would be quite comparable to that of the original Zeppelin.As the B&W's website says:

"With Zeppelin Mini, you get everything you love about Zeppelin - advanced acoustic technology, intelligent design, elegant connectivity - in a streamlined, compact sound dock package that's perfect for desktops and bedside tables. "

But I was let down; the two speakers produce completely different sound. Pop music (I tried out Rhianna and Britney Spears) sounded okay due to the typically louder treble and bass in the recording, although when played louder it sounded clearly distorted and hollow; classical symphonies (I tried out Brahms' Symphony #4 and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto #1) sounded disappointing - the entire bass section cannot be heard until the volume is cranked up really high!; classical solo and chamber music (I played Vivaldi's Four Season - Winter, 2.Largo) turned out to be surprisingly really good and in my opinion the best genre for this speaker.After turning on Bass enhancer on my iPod EQ setting (unlike the original Z, the Mini does not have an external bass/treble control), the bass can be heard more but is too obviously distorted - cracking sound can be heard at times.

The bass sounded more full when positioned closer to me.B&W claims that the introduction of a flowport (absent in the original Zeppelin) is designed to amplify the bass; I found the outcome to be nothing like that of the original Zeppelin.I also expect the bass to be thicker if the speaker is placed against a wall or a corner (instead of in the middle of a table at the Apple store)

With the addition of USB connectivity, I was originally very excited about the idea of directly syncing my iPod to iTunes, controlling iTunes using a remote, and most importantly, the capability of bypassing analog signal processing on a computer to the speaker.However, given the significantly compromised quality of sound (esp. lack of bass), the idea of producing better quality analog signal that would only be greatly sacrificed in bass production seems meaningless.

Nevertheless, I was impressed with the design of the Mini.The speaker is much smaller than I'd envisioned based on the gallery (and after checking out the sound quality was I wished it was bigger).The Mini is light but feels very solid when carried around.The design is much more classy than other iPod speakers: the chrome bowl mirror matches the back of the original iPod (if you still own one); when firmly attached to the docking arm, it can be elegantly turned 90 degrees for cover flow (isn't that the only reason to buy an iPod touch/iPhone?); controlling the iPod has never been easier with the inventive protruded docking arm design (same as the original Z).Most impressive to me, the enclosure of black cloth over the speaker (as opposed to the colder, more industrial wire mesh used in Bose and other iPod speakers) stands out among the crowd with exquisiteness.

If I were to choose a small iPod speaker based on what looks best for my apartment, I would definitely go with the Mini.As for sound quality, it sounded very impressive for classical chamber music, good enough for pop, but definitely not satisfying for classical symphonies.However, if you are certain that any larger speaker (e.g. the original Z) cannot be considered, it is quite a good choice. (And at this price I would choose it over Bose any day - there, I said it).

Micro Innovations MM300S 2.1 Computer Speakers (3-Speaker, Black & White) Review

I've only looked at a few of the other similar systems at the stores and have found that these speakers sound almost as good as the "Altec" speakers but at a fraction of the cost. iLive 2.1-Channel Speaker Bar with iPod Dock (Black) Review

I bought this against my better judgement after reading a few reviews that this product works really well for a short period of time but then just stops working. That is exactly what happened to us. I even looked at it and played with it at Target before purchasing online and it seemed decent enough for the price. My 14 year old daughter begged me for it.The first one I bought lasted 3 weeks, I exchanged it for another and that one stopped after 1 week. Do not buy!

There's not a lot more to say.This system is simply excellent; there is one caveat though: make sure you put enough real estate between the 2 monitors -- they need room to breathe.Soundstage width and depth are excellent if they're given enough room.When you hear it, try to remember this is a $600.00 2.1 system; it will be difficult.BTW: my main system consists of a Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista (tube) DAC, VTL Tiny Triodes, Monitor Audio Silver Series towers, Transparent and Cardas speaker and power cabling, etc. I've wasted a lot of money on systems and this definitely ranks as one of the best values in my collection (the Monitor Audios top the list).

The Focal XS Story
Two years ago, Gerard Chretien, managing director at Focal, brought a pair of Solo6 Be Professional Studio Monitors at home ($2,500/pair). He connected them to his Mac in his office and quickly realized that there was nothing on the market that could rival this listening experience. 2-way Satellite Design with 2.5-Inch Mid-Range Driver
Most computer systems use a single driver to reproduce both mid-range and high frequencies. The result is unrealistic-sounding vocals and loss of detail and clarity in the higher frequencies. XS remedies that by including both--a paper cone driver for the mids as well as a mylar tweeter for the sizzle.
VSC Visual Sound Coincidence Concept
By elevating the satellite off the surface it sits on, early sound reflections are greatly diminished. The result is a massive improvement in clarity. Instead of bouncing back off the desk, the sound is directly going to the listener's ears.

The Audioengine ADS1 desktop speaker stand is sort of a specialized stand. It's fixed 15 degree tilt is ideal for most desks but the diminutive size limits their utility to tiny micro speakers. In other words if you're planning to use them with really small micro speakers you'll find a pair (one each) to be just the right size. However if you plan to use larger bookshelf speakers you may find that you need two of these per speaker.

I LOVE THESE SPEAKERS.Ok, I have to say that I was greedy about reviewing these speakers b/c I bought a whole bunch of them over the past year and didn't want them to run out of stock.These speakers ROCK for a small gift or stocking stuffer and the PERFECT price.If they raise the price on these, don't blame me. They're that good. They plug into your iPod earphone jack and run off of AAA batteries and they also give you an AC adapter that you can plug in. However, they do not charge your iPod.Sound quality is pretty good for a small room and to just play tunes to yourself without having to wear earphones.My wife is a singer and loves them for listening to music that she needs to review music that she has to perform. I got this adapter as a replacement for my broken headphone jack which I used to plug my speakers into.

With the adapter (Used in conjunction with my Logitech X-240 Speakers), however, there is a small, but noticeable, amount of static coming from some songs. I can't be sure as to what causes the static, but in the songs where it does occur, lowering the 8K and 16K settings in the iTunes equalizer makes most of it go away.

But, if you're like me and like loud music, you will be disappointed. Turning up the volume makes the speakers sound like they're going to blow out any second. This didn't use to happen when I didn't need the adapter.

In review: It's not terrible, but not great. Not for loud music fans.

Let me start by saying that if you have the right I-pod ot I-touch this is a great system, but what I didn't know until after I bought mine was that it is only compatible up to Gen 2 for the I-touch and I have a gen 3, 64GB.It comes with lots of inserts and fits many i-pods, but not mine.Calling and emailing the company to find out if perhaps there is a new gen 3 insert I can buy was a waste of time. Every call went to a voicemal telling me they would call right back (I'm still waiting, weeks later) and every email was ignored as well.

Needless to say, my investment (and I had planned to buy the extra speaker for throughout my home and patio) is now wasted.The I-touch works going line in, but thats not what I bought.If you had the right i-pod or touch though it would be great as long as you didn't need service or support. The speakers turn themselves on when the unit comes on and everything can also be powered up by turning on even a speaker.Great concept.

Griffin 9211-SNSADK PowerDock for Sansa Review

The product is alright. First, it doesn't come with a wall charger. Which you will have to buy seperate if you want to charge your Sansa other than from your PC.
MOST IMPORTANT!!!! Sandisk has released a Power Dock for the Sansa which plugs into the wall and has a remote control. I found out the hard way, needless to say i own both of them.
Amazon offers the Sandisk version of this dock, just do a search!

Sima SSW-L6EX Speaker Selector for 6-Sets of Speakers Review

This speaker selector works as advertised. It is easy to set up. I am not an audiofile or an expert. Set up took about 25 minutes, including reading the simple manual. I had 6 pairs of speakers to install. The plug-in terminals made this simple. A definite improvement over my 4 pair ProLogic speaker selector. The only complaints I have are minor. A) There are no labels for the different speaker pairs. I had to use my old labels from the ProLogic. B) There is no indicator light to tell you which speaker pair is on. I have speakers outside and I have to walk to the unit to determine if that pair is on or not.
